GALLERY VISITS - NEWCASTLE, NOVEMBER 2014

SIDE GALLERY, NEWCASTLE - CONFRONTIER, KAI WIEDENHÖFER, 1989-2012

Confrontier is a collection of work from photographer Kai Wiedenhöfer, drawing together a selection photographs from the past 20 years. These images all address one single subject matter – The Wall. The exhibition seeks to show the effect of physical, artificial divisions we impose on ourselves and each other. This effect is shown in the photographs, with the condition of the walls coming to reflect the sentiments of those living alongside them.

SYSTEM GALLERY, NEWCASTLE - ROADWORKS, ANDY SLATER, 2014

Roadworks by Andy Slater subverts the familiar images and symbols of the roadside into artwork in a range of media. Using paint, acrylic sculpture and light, this work looks for beauty in in these forms whilst varying the amount of recognisability in the pieces.

BALTIC | 39, NEWCASTLE - LISTENING, HAYWARD TOURING, CURATED BY SAM BELINFANTE

The Baltic 39 provides the setting for a collection of works curated by Sam Belinfante examining Listening. The exhibition spaces exist deep within the plan and of the top level of the building, providing a calm atmosphere far removed from the urban street at the exterior. In addition to the process of reaching the gallery space, the rooms themselves help to hone the particular sense of hearing by gradually decreasing other visual stimulus. One particular room is completely darkened with only a select few lights allowing full attention to be given to the sound installation.
